What happened?

On April 16, 2025, Governor Bob Ferguson signed Washington House Bill 1524 (WA HB1524) into law. This bill updates and expands upon previous legislation related to workplace standards for isolated employees. Its enactment depends on securing funds in the omnibus appropriations act by June 30, 2025.


Overview:

HB1524 strengthens workplace safety standards for isolated employees in industries such as hotels, motels, retail, security, and property services. It mandates comprehensive protections to ensure a safer work environment.


Operational Changes

  • Enhanced Safety Measures: Employers must implement and maintain safety measures like panic buttons to protect isolated employees.
    • The Department of Labor and Industries will advise and guide employers with 50 or fewer employees regarding the provision of panic buttons.
  • Increased Administrative Work: Employers will face additional administrative tasks, including documenting training, maintaining records, and submitting annual reports.
  • Potential Financial Impact: Non-compliance can result in significant financial penalties, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the new regulations.
